Saint André Bessette
Established July 1, 2011
(on the grounds of the former St Francis Xavier)
On July 1, 2011, a new parish community was formed under the name of St André Bessette.
St André Bessette Parish came to be as a result of the merger between St Francis Xavier, Ecorse, and Our Lady of Lourdes, River Rouge.
The new name “St André Bessette” was selected by Archbishop Allen Vigneron from a listing of prospective names which also included Blessed Mary Frances, St Maximilian Kolbe, and St Maria Goretti. This listing was populated by parishioners of both parishes.
With guidance from Archdiocesan Representative Anthony Latarski, Fr Jim Wieging and the new administrator of St. André Bessette, Fr Cornelius Okeke, a ‘transitional’ Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) was formed. This PPC consisted of members of the former merger committee (7 parishioners from each parish).
Barb Rzucidlo - Chair
Robert Heller - Co-Chair (member Chuck Hunter moved to Florida)
Maria Valdez - Secretary
Nancy Eluskie - Member
Teresa Shekerdemian - Member
Diane Mihalfi - Member
Gloria Regorrah - Member
From this PPC, our first Finance Council was formed:
Jerry Sauve - Chair
Denise Balogh - Co-Chair
Patty Carmona - Member
Rita Vozniak - Member
Fr Cornelius Okeke was officially installed as our first parish priest on November 23, 2013.
This Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Council is a glimpse into the brief history of the new St André Bessette Parish and is accompanied by our fervent prayers for her future.
May our new parish community and councils live by our statement: to know, love, and serve God.
